SIXTH seed Reynaldo de Guzman captured the UM Boys 2nd Mini Chess Tournament title at Great View Resort in the Island Garden City of Samal over the weekend.
De Guzman tallied eight points in the 11-round Swiss System format competition followed by Jimmy Dano in second with 7.5 points.
Alexander Clavite and lawyer Jong Guevarra, Jr. scored identical seven points to share the third and fourth place.
Trailing behind were six-pointers Alexander Jover and Nofre Reyes, Arnold Jabilles (4.5 points), Cerilio Acas (4), Rey Amable (3) and Paul Garcia (2).
De Guzman defeated Giovani Pimentel, Garcia, Jabilles, Acas, Jover, Amable, Clavite and Reyes but bowed to Dano and Guevarra. He drew a bye in the last round
Dano, for his part, claimed seven victories, forced one draw and lost two matches. His sixth round was a bye.
Clavite, meanwhile, also beat seven opponents but he also was subdued by three rivals. He had a bye in the fifth round.
Participants of the single round-robin tournament were mostly former varsity players of the University of Mindanao.
