Antique governor to visit 2,000 ‘sacadas’ in Negros

ANTIQUE Governor Rhodora Cadiao is set to arrive in the Negros Occidental on November 15 to 18 to visit sugarcane farm workers or sacadas in Negros Occidental who are residents of her province.

In the previous years, there were 7,000 sacadas from Antique who worked in the province. But now, it was already down to 2,000 based on the record provided by the Provincial Government of Antique.

Although the numbers have reduced, most of the sugar planters in the province are relying on sacadas from other provinces like Antique for the harvest of the sugarcane plantation.

Lack of farm workers has been one of the major problems of the sugar industry in the province as most of the workers now are already into construction because of bigger pay and easier jobs.

Cadiao's visit will be her fourth as part of her sacada program.

The governor will visit the town of Murcia and La Carlota City or a total of 22 haciendas where there are confirmed workers coming from Antique.

The Sacada Desk is a program initiated by Cadiao to take care of these migrant workers in Negros Occidental after receiving reports of maltreatment and abuse by landowners.

Cadiao said she wants the number of migrant workers working in Negros Occidental to go down by implementing a comprehensive livelihood program and financial assistance.

With Cadiao during her visit here are representatives from the Antique Provincial Health Office, Provincial Social Welfare and Development, Department of Labor and Development, and the Philippine National Police.

The governor, in coordination with the local governments of Murcia and La Carlota, will also conduct a medical mission for the workers.
