Highland boxers dominate boxing for a cause

THREE fighters from the Highland Boxing dominated their opponents Tuesday afternoon, November 6, in the Highland Brawl 5 at the Cordillera Career Development College gym in Buyagan, La Trinidad, Benguet.

Jilbert Gomera went toe to toe and delivered killer punches which Mindoro Oriental native Lloyd Jardeliza weathered including a third round standing eight count to win the Luzon Boxing Professional Associations featherweight title.

Gomera went for the kill early in the first round landing barrage of combinations to the head and to the body but Jardeliza just absorbed all the punches and went on the finish the bout with all three judges saw the Highland Boxing Gym fighter win via unanimous decision, 78-73, 78–73, 77–74.

Ivor Lastrilla secured the Luzproba lightweight after knocking out Dan Monosa of Metro Manila in the third round.

Lastrilla got a busted nose in the first and an ugly cut on his right eye in the second round that saw Highland’s Brico Santig stand from his chair and started pacing, looking worried.

But the wound sent the seemingly underdog Lastrilla to a third round rage that saw Manosa clutch his abdomen. The Tacloban native, now La Trinidad based Lastrilla, pressed on his attacks that saw Manosa going down on his knees apparently from a low blow stopping the game for almost two minutes as the visitor tried catching his breath.

Lastrilla pressed his attack even more when the bout resumed sending Manosa to the corner. A strong blow on his abdomen with five seconds left in the round saw him falling on his knees again and never stood up. He was counted out giving Lastrilla the win.

Romshane Sarguilla, made it three for three for Highland Boxing Gym after winning the Luzproba super flyweight title with a 77-75, 79-73, 79-73 unanimous decision against Malabon’s Mervin Lulu.

In the undercard, Highland’s Rey Juntilla clouted Junjie Launza for a massive 60-54 win in all of the judges’ cards to win their six round super featherweight fight.

Highland’s Lony Cadayday needed only a round to make Benjie Bartolome surrender in a six round super flyweight bout.

Manila’s Gary Tamayo weathered two rounds of beating but a wayward left midway in the third caught Kiangan’s MJ Uduna on the jaw that saw the much taller local crumpling on the floor in one of the most astonishing turn outs of the event.

Tamayo gave four inch in height, but was able to survive the first two rounds. Avoiding the longer reach of the local near the latter’s corner gave him the opportunity to unleash the left which fortunately caught Uduna’s chin.

It needed at least five minutes to revive the fallen fighter as medical personnel gave him oxygen to recover.

In the curtain raiser, local Ador Torres avoided a loss to a classier Alejandro Anas of Baguio after a 39-37, 38-38, 38-38 majority draw decision.

CCDC pride Saskia Fagyan narrowly won over Bontoc Mountain Province native Aryette Bayachan of Scorpion in the lone kickboxing match held after the four round bouts.

The event was supposed to be staged at the People’s Park but Typhoon Rosita arrived on the day of the event forcing organizers Highland and DMAD promotions and move it on said date and venue.

Santig also thanked the Benguet Electric Cooperative, host CCDC, Philex Mining Corporation, lawyer Jose Molintas, Police Regional Office Cordillera director Rolando Nana and La Trinidad mayor Romeo Salda on top of presentors Sinwancha Foundation and Fightnews. (Roderick Osis )
