Council seeks re-allocation of the disapproved P85M budget

THE Iloilo City Council has requested Mayor Jose Espinosa III to re-allocate the P85 million from the Supplemental Budget No. 3 to effectuate repair or rehabilitation of the city’s public markets and abattoir.

In a resolution, the council through its finance committee has requested Espinosa to allot funds since, according to Councilor Armand Parcon, the markets and abattoir were abandoned and deteriorated due to the facilities’ poor quality and lack of supervision from its management.

On November 5, the Iloilo City government conducted a consultative meeting with the vendors and stakeholders to present the redevelopment plan of Iloilo Central Market amounting P866.972-million.

Parcon said that the public markets only needed a rehabilitation citing the market vendors’ opinion.

“To reiterate the prevailing sentiments of the market vendors, there is no need to totally demolish the Iloilo central market edifies what they want especially essential needs are repair of its leaking roofs,” he said during his privilege speech.

Previously, the council disapproved Espinosa’s budget proposal for the proposed land development and site embankment and compaction for the proposed construction of Iloilo City Sports arena in Barangay San Pedro in the district of Molo amounting to P35,000,000 and the P50,000,000 for the multi-purpose building for office at KER and company site.

As stated, Parcon proposed to re-allocate the deleted proposed budget to the rehabilitate the markets.

“My proposal is intended for the betterment of the public markets in the city,” he said. (Carolyn Jane Abello)
