Netflix, the world’s leading internet entertainment service, hosted “See What’s Next: Asia” on Nov. 8 to 9 at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. This was the first-of-its-kind event in Asia.

Chief executive officer Reed Hastings headlined the talks and shared on the state of the company and its plans moving forward, including how it would affect Asia and the rest of the world.

“[Netflix] invests in stories, and we commission some of the best stories around the world,” the CEO said.

Originals

Celebrities like Michael Peña and Diego Luna (“Narcos: Mexico”), Robin Wright (“House of Cards”) and Andy Serkis (“Mowgli”) were also present, among others, to promote the latest originals on Netflix.

Wright talked about the impact of “House of Cards”—now on its final season—and spoke about the evolution of her character Claire Underwood.

“She was always there—the tenet was always there that she was going to become equally if not more ruthless than Francis,” referring to her husband in the series.

“I love the writing of the series; the angle, the perspective of the stories told. We’re not telling a story about good and bad people. This story lives in the gray areas,” Luna shared about “Narcos: Mexico.”

Serkis, who directed “Mowgli,” shared how it was to create a “darker” version of Rudyard Kipling’s 1894 literary work “The Jungle Book.”

“If you go back to the book, it is darker than most people’s perception [of the story],” Serkis said, adding that “Mowgli” is more of a drama of a boy’s “rite of passage.”

More names during the event included David Castañeda (“The Umbrella Academy”), Robert Sheehan (“The Umbrella Academy”), Ju Ji Hun (“Kingdom”), Ryu Seung Yong (“Kingdom”) and Park Min Young (“Busted!”).

Castañeda and Sheehan discussed the complexities of the protagonists in “The Umbrella Academy.”

“I think part of the archetypical superhero film is that they get the girl; they save the day. I think our series explores the necessity of failure,” Sheehan said.

Asian Titles

“See What’s Next: Asia” also showcased upcoming material from Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, India and South Korea. The event also held the first-ever screening of the highly anticipated International Original from South Korea, “Kingdom.”

Writer Kim Eun-hee, who had been planning the drama since 2011 but couldn’t get to produce it for television due to the level of violence required in the storytelling, shared her take on the theme of the upcoming Korean period drama.

“Hunger. It’s a story about monsters with only hunger left.”

“Busted!”—which is on its second season—gathers Korean entertainment icons and haves them solve a different mystery every episode. Showrunner Chang Hyukjae announced Lee Seung-gi, from “A Korean Odyssey,” will be joining the second season.

Netflix also announced five new Anime titles that are Netflix Originals: “Pacific Rim,” “Altered Carbon,” “Cagaster of an Insect Cage,” “Yasuke” and “Trese.”

“Trese” is based on the Philippine graphic novel by the same name, created by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldissimo. It is set in the city of Manila where mythical creatures of Philippine folklore live in hiding among humans.

“We are extremely excited that ‘Trese’ will be adapted into an animated series by Netflix. ‘Trese’ has always been our love letter to Philippine myth and folklore and now we get the chance to share it with the world. We’re even more thrilled that Jay Oliva is going to be our director since he’s worked on a lot of our favorite animated movies,” Tan shared over an online interview. (LQ3)
