WE HEAR scary stories and wear Halloween costumes every November but the most important occasion this month is remembering our departed loved ones.

We offer prayers, light candles, and give flowers to them.

Here in Negros Occidental, we do not just visit graves in cemeteries because All Soul's Day or as "Tigkalalag" every November 2 is not just about the death of our loved ones but also a culture of life.

Isabela town in the province celebrated its 14th Tigkalalag Festival from October 31 to November 2.

Themed “Sustaining the unique culture of Tigkalalag Festival,” Isabeleños showcased their talents and creativity, with a twist in concepts innovated to suit the message of resurrection or reincarnation through dances.

On November 2, six groups competed in the Tigkalalag Street Dance and Arena Competition.

These are Isabela National High School (INHS)-Sikatuna Extension, INHS-Junior High, La Consolacion College (LCC)-Isabela, INHS-Senior High, Libas National High School, and Tinongan National High School.

INHS-Junior High School bested five other groups in the competition. They received a trophy and P60,000 cash prize.

The school also got the special awards for best in concept and choreography.

INHS-Senior High finished first runner-up. They received a trophy and P40,000 cash prize. They also got an award for best in costume.

Tinongan National High School was the second runner-up. They received a trophy and P20,000 cash prize.

Libas National High School also received an award for best in street dance.

Meanwhile, this year's Tigkalalag Queen is Krissela Joy Quinto.

About 10,000 crowd witnessed the festivity, said Mayor Joselito Malabor, as he thanked the Isabeleños and visitors for supporting the three-day festival.

“We will promote the town as the holy municipality of Negros Island through this kind of festivity, wherein people can see the culture of the Filipinos,” he said.

The mayor also expressed his gratitude to the local police for securing the festivity with no festival-related incident happened.

After the competition, a fireworks display and a Halloween party were held in the town.
