Quick Hit 26

I’LL keep it short and sweet this weekend.

So short that it’s just going to be about my biggest disappointment about the new iPad Pro.

The iPad Pro not supporting external hard drives via the USB-C port.

I really think Apple missed the chance on this. Although this is an iOS issue and Apple may or may not (hopefully the former) choose to rectify in the future, it’s a bummer that the iPad Pro won’t support external hard drives natively through the USB-C port. A good friend, DJ Funk Avy, linked me to a YouTube video (which I embedded below) to solve the problem.

It’s a laudable solution. One that involved buying another device though. That’s one more device that I’d rather not buy and carry around. If Apple had just supported external hard drives right off the bat, this won’t be a problem at all.

As a photographer, myself, I’d love to be able to edit my photos while on-the-go. I can imagine myself bringing with me the iPad Pro to every shoot or trip I’ll have. The workflow I imagine would be:

* take photos

* import photos into iPad Pro from camera

* connect my external hard drive via USB-C

* transfer photos to external hard drive

* edit photos from external hard drive or from within iPad Pro

It’s streamlined. The entire setup is lightweight (especially when paired with a mirrorless camera). It’s perfect for the mobile photographer. And with Adobe releasing a full version of Photoshop designed with the iPad Pro in mind, there’s not much to argue against this kind of setup and workflow. And then the reality sets in that external hard drives aren’t supported.

Bummer.

If they’re touting the new iPad Pro to become a replacement for your laptop, this omission of support for external hard drives is a real downer.

If you’re curious about what other things tech reviewer say about the iPad Pro why it only came close to becoming a laptop replacement but not really, check out this article from Digg.

So... the question now is: what can you connect to the iPad Pro? There are some things that you can connect. Check out this article from 9to5 Mac.
