THE Municipal Government of La Castellana was awarded as one of the most child-friendly local government units (LGUs) in Western Visayas by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) regional office.

Mayor Rhumyla Nicor-Mangilimutan received the award in rites held in Iloilo City on Friday, November 9.

Mangilimutan, in a statement, said the award was based on the assessment of the DILG on the Municipal Government's programs and projects for 2017, particularly for the child sector.

Nicor-Mangilimutan said that reduction of child labor cases is the most notable impact of these programs in the locality.

"The Municipal Government also has health services for the children including daycare feeding program," she said.

In terms of rating, La Castellana has moved up to 98 percent as far as child development is concerned, the mayor added.

Nicor-Mangilimutan recalled that the local government was also cited recently by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) as the most improved LGU in the implementation of social pension for indigent senior citizens.

Instead of the recipients going to the municipal hall, Nicor-Mangilimutan said she tasked municipal employees to go to the barangays to turn over the social pension to the senior citizens.

Of the 15,000 senior citizens in the town, 5,000 are recipients of the program.

Nicor-Mangilimutan also confirmed that she was again nominated for outstanding mayor by the Superbrands for the second year.

Superbrands has cited her as among the outstanding mayors in the country this year. (EPN)
