Heavy rains affect 133 families in Silay

AROUND 133 families in Silay City were forced to evacuate after heavy rains caused flooding in some parts of the city over the weekend.

Silay City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (DRRMO) head Alex Muñoz said six sitios in Barangays 2, Rizal, Lantad and Guinhalaran were affected by the flooding caused by heavy rains and high tide that started 9 p.m. Saturday, November 10, and ended around 5 a.m. the following day.

The evacuees spent the night at the covered courts of their respective barangays.

Silay City Mayor Mark Andrew Golez said the evacuees were later allowed to go home after flood waters subsided.

Golez said there were no casualties recorded during the flooding.

The local DRRMO also said the affected areas are considered low land and near to the river that is why it is considered as flood-prone areas.

Golez said the city has provided the affected families with rice assistance through their respective barangays.

He added he will order the City Engineering Office to check what cause the flooding for possible de-clogging operation. (TDE)
