I finally got a chance to see Bohemian Rhapsody last Sunday. No, not the legendary song but the iconic band behind it.
As you may know by now, Bohemian Rhapsody is a biopic based on the life of Freddie Mercury and the story of Queen.
So I dove in as someone who knew Queen’s music. Although I was born in the same year that Freddie Mercury passed away, my parents have always been big Queen fans. Their music has always been something that I grew up around and knew quite well.
Like any other biopic, I had the thought right away that the timeline would be moved around, thus, it wouldn't be 100 percent accurate. And it wouldn’t be spoon-feeding all the details for the youngsters who never saw Queen onstage, but it will be showing enough scenes that will give the right tug in people’s hearts
True enough, the film was utterly charismatic. Every second and scene meant something and made me feel connected---whether through laughter, gloom or inspiration. The music was just so larger than life, such a celebration of humanity.
Perhaps, it can make anyone feel so close from how it is to listen to a Queen song, whether it’s on vinyl, cassette, CD or in our case today, on Spotify.
Moreover, the casting resemblances, as well the wardrobe and makeup gave me cold creeps as far as accuracy is concerned.
The recreation of the historical concerts and the crowds blew me away. (No kidding! I’ve even went back and forth to Youtube to compare, and I suggest you do too.)
It was an insane #throwback that teleported me back in time.
But was resonated to me the most is the fact that it’s been over 25 years since the death of lead singer Mercury, yet there seems to be a strong link between him and our generation.
Well, he was just like anyone of us, a “rebellious misfit” who redefined and challenged stereotypes during a time when this wasn’t fully accepted yet, just as Queen’s music refuses to be slotted into any conventional genre. No wonder the band is cross-generational and multicultural, making their music known until this era.
