No shelters for IPs on Christmas season

THE City Government unit of Davao will not provide shelters for Indigenous Peoples (IPs) coming to the city during the Christmas season.

Davao City Social Services and Development Office (CSSDO) head Malou Bermudo said this will be for the safety and security of the IPs who are expected to come to the city during Christmas season.

“Wala tay established na shelter areas (We do not have established shelter areas),” Bermudo said, adding that they have been telling the IPs that it is for their safety and security.

Bermudo said the city has been conducting round-ups, rescue, and surveillance for those who will still wander around the city. A team has been deployed to monitor them around the city.

Bermudo said a meeting with local government units (LGUs) in the provinces of Surigao and Agusan were done to facilitate the return of “visiting” indigenes to their respective communities.

“Mao na karon, if you notice, gina-balik-probinsya gyud nato sila. And even prior to this, we have coordinated a close meeting with them [LGUs] (That is why right now, we make it sure that they go back to their provinces. And even prior to this, we already had a coordination meeting with other LGUs),” she said.
