AFP declares no more rebels in 2019

ARMED Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief of staff General Carlito Galvez Jr. is upbeat that the communist insurgency problem of the country will end next year.

“We are very confident that by 2019, we will be finishing the CPP-NPA (Communist Party of the Philippines – New People’s Army) and we are so happy that the support of the LGUs (local government unit), the support of the people is very overwhelming,” Galvez said during his visit on Tuesday, November 13, at Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) headquarters in Panacan, Davao City.

Galvez is determined to put an end to the decades-old insurgency and with the accomplishments on the ground, he believed that it could be attained.

“We have also good commanders. We have the best commanders in Eastmincom and we are happy with the performance of our units [which] has been very very significant,” he said.

He said that there were already a total of 11,333 surrenderers including the mass-based organization nationwide.

“Nakikita natin napakalaki, sa buong Eastmincom, we are considering seven guerilla fronts that was completely dismantled and there are also guerilla fronts that have been weakened,” he said, giving 100 percent performance rate to Eastmincom.

Eastmincom seized a total of 732 firearms and a total of 7,144 individuals were neutralized which means that they were either killed, captured, apprehended, or surrendered since January 1.

For surrenderers alone, based on their data, there were a total of 7,075 members and supporters who surrendered. Of this number, 2,372 surrendered to the 4th Infantry Division and 4,702 to the 10th ID while one to the Joint Task Force Haribon.

The downgraded guerilla fronts (GF) of Eastmincom are GF 13, 19 and 30 in Northern Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee; GF 6 in North Central Mindanao Regional Committee (NCMRC); GF 33, 25and 51 in Southern Mindanao Regional Committee; and GF 71 in Far South Mindanao Region (FSMR).

Meanwhile, a total of 230 improvised explosive devices were recovered while 130 encampments of the New People’s Army were discovered in their jurisdiction.
