A FILIPINA who has promoted awareness about people with autism bagged the first Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Prize during the opening ceremony of the regional bloc's 33rd summit in Singapore.

Erlinda Uy Koe, chair emeritus of Autism Society Philippines and chairperson of the Asean Autism Network, bested 49 other nominees for the award.

Koe received a trophy and a cash prize of $20,000.

Asean Prize aims to recognize inspiring achievements and inspiring contributions of an individual or organization that foster the Asean identity, promote the Asean spirit, and champion the Asean way in designated focus areas.

President Rodrigo Duterte, in his intervention during his working dinner with Asean leaders on Tuesday, November 13, congratulated Koe for winning the Asean Prize.

"Allow me to welcome the launching and establishment of the Asean Prize," the President said.

"The Philippines is honored by the conferment of the premier award to Ms. Erlinda Uy Koe, whose work with Asean Society Philippines and Asean Autism Network has touched the lives of persons with autism and their families across the region," he added.

In a statement on Tuesday, November 13, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said Koe brought "tremendous pride and great honor to the country."

Panelo said Koe’s contributions in improving the lives of people with autism symbolize the Asean spirit as "an inclusive, resilient, people-oriented and people-centered community."

"We cannot be more proud of Ms. Koe and may her exemplary works inspire greater righteousness and dignity in all of us," the Palace official said. (SunStar Philippines)
