THE City Government of San Fernando, through its City Agriculture and Veterinary Office (CAVO) and in partnership with the Agricultural Training Institute III, on Tuesday, November 13, continued to promote urban vegetable gardening during a seminar at Heroes Hall.
Agriculturist Francisco Cangco Jr. explained that the activity was conducted to utilize small areas and target all sectors of the government and the community.
“We really want to make housewives and farmers to plant vegetables in their backyards rather than still buying at the market, while not knowing about the sanitation of the vegetables they are selling there. In short, we want every household to have their own garden so that people can have no problems with vegetables at all. We just want to ensure safety among families,” Cangco said.
Cangco added that he wanted people to put these gardening knowledge in mind, and in due time “only people with sown seeds can harvest their own fruits.”
The seminar was attended by 50 participants, who are farmers and housewives from Barangay Del Carmen and Barangay Bulaon.
CAVO agricultural technicians Lenny Tongol, Claudette Mendoza, Palermo Pineda, Agricultural Technician Donalene Megino, and City Health Officer Dunn Patrick Imana discussed vegetable production training, practicum on seed selection, seedling tray preparation, planting containers, and concoctions, Philippine National Standards for organic agriculture, food safety, and code of hygienic practices.
