NOVEMBER 11, 2018 has been a big day for Kagay-anon families as Creo Early Learning Partners Inc. launched Family Forward 2018: Parenting and Partnership, The Family Today at Seda Hotel.

Family Forward 2018 was a terrific opportunity for our Kagay-anon parents from different walks of life as they joined very interactive and insightful conversations on how best to engage, enlighten and empower their children. Powered by a high caliber set of speakers who dedicated their career to educate families all over the country, participants of the activity were provided with an afternoon full of reflections and eureka moments.

Getting to know Creo

A duly registered corporation, Creo is owned and managed by educators with a combined experience of 50 years in the field of early childhood and elementary education. This budding group in our city was born out of a desire to provide progressive training programs to early childhood education professionals, parents, and other child care workers.

Creo means to "create" in Latin and "I believe" in Spanish. This group aims at stirring and nurturing partnerships with the belief that different sectors in the community can be a potent force in addressing various learning gaps and creating opportunities to empower members to be active in enabling children.

Rocking the boat and creating spaces of learning opportunities for families and educators, this group are passionate for more concrete and relevant initiatives to bring about holistic development to children. With the members of the group who simply started from having simple conversations, they ended up with amazing dreams for bringing the amazing potentials of young children as advocates. Having this in mind, they conceptualize this much appreciated and warmly welcomed Family Forward 2018.

The family

Making its first mark in the city, Creo launched its efforts by giving premium to the family. Family Forward 2018 has been a venue for parents to gather and discuss pertinent issues that concerns their children. As Creo President, Mikey Dosdos said "Parents can help children understand themselves, the world around them and their value in society." Thus, making parents crucial instruments in the development of children and their society.

With the many factors affecting the Filipino family, one cannot help but to ask what are the effective ways to best raise a family. Since there aren't enough educational experiences and formation programs that can help prepare couples to be ready for their roles, most of the times, they usually resort to their personal experiences growing up with their own families, which are, mostly complex and more complicated to tackle. Thus, parenting becomes an on-going learning experience.

Laying the ground work for raising your child

Ms. Anna Kristina Zamora, a seasoned family and child development psychologist, provided a groundwork on the important points to raise a child. She said that one of the best ways to understand the child is through the life of the parents. Thus, more than parenting techniques and tips, she said that to be a good parents, they should be "physically, emotionally, and spiritually healthy." To be effective parents then, starts from the life lived by the parents themselves.

In this digital age, she also emphasized the need of individuals to be more discerning than ever. She also tackled concerns on making connections, allowing mistakes, discipline, setting boundaries, having a pause among others. As a summary, she asserted, "Be what you want your child to be." This point emphasizes the need for parents as role models. At the same time, "to be able to dispense love, parents' love tank should also be filled," she asserted.

Happy parents, happy children

As an affirmation to Zamora's talk, Dr. Allan Dionisio and Ma. Isabel Dionisio, emphasized on the critical role of a loving relationship of parents to the development of the child. As the Dionisio's repeatedly pointed out, "happy couple, happy children." Thus, to be able to maintain happy, there is a need for couples to continuously learn through educational programs such as the one organized by Creo.

Part of maintaining a happy marriage is to be sensitive to the needs of their spouses, especially since partners live in varying contexts. Thus, in the marriage enterprise, they said that, "Marital happiness is like a barter trade." This starts by explicitly knowing what each other’s needs are.

But single parents are not excused in this arena as they too are expected to have healthy lives since they too are expected to be positive agents of influence to their children. As such they are challenged not to be hard on themselves, find extra effort to take good care of themselves, on others, and to stay positive.

Excited for what's next?

With a half day of learning and discovering great things in this arena, participants of the event simply wanted to have more of this types of initiatives. But good news, this child care and education advocates are just beginning! After a successful launching activity, a series of initiatives are set for our fellow Kagay-anons to maximize and look forward to.

They will be holding Partners in Effective Parenting (PEP) talks, which will be on the developmental milestones and creating learning experiences, which will be given by the Director for Student and Teacher Development of Abba's Orchard, Dr. Ann Paez- Barrameda. Thus, this PEP talk aims in providing parents with practical advises on maximizing the growth and learning opportunities of young children. Something to watch out this February 9, 2019.

Also, Nanny Cares who is a trainer for child care workers aims at providing them with a background on child development, which hopefully will give our lovingly called yayas age appropriate strategies in dealing with the children under their care. Mrs. Junefel Colonia-Macagba of Xavier University, School of Education will be the sharer for this session on March 9, 2019

Childlike Wonder 2019 with the theme Kaleidoscope: Designed to be different, is a workshop to help early childhood educators to explore current trends and issues that affect children aged 0-8. Creo will be bringing three awesome speakers from Manila to make educators adopt competencies in this area.

Family forward and beyond

In sum, Creo created an exciting and enormous impact in their launching activity and it is something that Kagay-anon children advocates watch out. Cagayan de Oro became a more exciting arena for learning since Family Forward 2018 by Creo!
