MSU-IIT opposes Supreme Court order vs Filipino, Panitikan subjects

THE Mindanao State University-Institute of Technology's (MSU-IIT) Filipino Department is opposing a Supreme Court (SC) ruling that Filipino and Panitikan (Philippine Literature) may now be excluded from the core subjects in college as it upheld the constitutionality of the controversial K to 12 law.

In a statement, the university's Filipino Department said they were dismayed by the decision, saying it is now more than ever that the very subject should be taught, amid the globalization and neocolonialism in the country.

"Sa loob ng pambansang wika at panitikan nagaganap ang salimuot ng diskurso ng pambansang katinuan at identidad. Nakapaloob ang kolektibong kamalayan at mithiin ng isang bayan sa sarili nitong wika at katitikan," the statement said.

The Filipino professors added that the Filipino language, literature, and history strengthen the very core of this country.

Filipino professor Almayrah Tiburon of MSU-Marawi City meanwhile said the Filipino language unites despite the differences in belief, and religion among others.

Tiburon said the Filipino language is very much alive in its university and in the country, and is used to communicate and achieve peace.

"Kaakibat ng pagtanggal ng Filipino at Panitikan sa kolehiyo ang pagtakwil at pagbura ng tatak at pagkakakilanlan nating mga Pilipino," she said.

Tiburon said removing Filipino and literature as core subjects in college are signs that the country is moving backwards.

"Tunay itong maituturing na kalapastangan. Sayang lang ang buwis na binabawas sa mga guro ng Filipino na napupunta sa CHED at Korte Suprema," she added.

The decision, promulgated on October 9, declared K-12 constitutional and lifted the TRO against the Commission on Higher Education's (CHED’s) Memorandum Order No. 20 (CMO No. 20) which excluded Filipino and Pantikan as core courses in college.
