Lapu-Lapu City to deploy e-jeepneys soon

A BATCH of a hundred e-jeepneys (electronic jeepneys) will be deployed in Lapu-Lapu City hopefully before the year ends.

Malvin Arias, chairman of the United Drivers/Operators Transport Cooperative (Udotco), said the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) granted their cooperative the right to operate the e-jeepneys.

While the e-jeepney batteries can be charged through the usual electric source, it is mostly solar-powered and thus environment-friendly.

Arias said they will still have to put up a charging station at the tricycle parking area in Barangay Poblacion where the Udotco office is also located. That, while Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza had promised to install a second charging station.

He said that based on their tests, the vehicle consumes minimal power and takes less than 10 kilowatts to have its battery fully charged.

“Mora lang kag nagpuno og P50 sa imong electric bill (It’s like adding P50 to your electric bill),” said Arias in a talk with Superbalita Cebu.

Drivers and dispatchers should be members of Udotco and should undergo a seminar on how to operate the e-jeepney, which has a 20 to 22 seating capacity.

They will be paid on a daily basis and will receive social security, Pag-ibig and Philhealth benefits.

“Above minimum ang makubra sa drayber, P450 ngadto na sa P500 ang adlaw. Samtang minos lang dyutay ang sa konduktor (The drivers will receive above minimum wage of P450 to P500 per day, while the conductor will receive slightly lower),” said the Udotco chairman.

Drivers and conductors will work in an eight-hour shift. The route will start at ML Quezon Highway to Barangay Pusok, Ibo, Buaya, Mactan, Maribago, Agus, Marigondon, Basak, and back to the public market.

“Kon pilay pletehan sa mga pasahero ngadto sa traysikol (base sa destinasyon), parehas ra sa e-jeepney (The e-jeepneys will have the same fare rate as that of the tricycles),” said Arias.

Radaza said that along with the deployment of e-jeepneys, the government will also phase out tricycle units that have been used for over 15 years, which she said had helped worsen the city’s traffic. (from FVQ of SuperBalita Cebu)
