Paralegal training on violence against women set

FIFTY women leaders and gender and development advocates will attend the paralegal training on violence against women (VAW) on November 19 to 21 at Palmas del Mar Conference Resort Hotel in Bacolod City.

The training is a project of the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental implemented by the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office through the Provincial Council for Women.

PCW chair Andrea Lizares-Si said the paralegal training is conducted as part of their continued advocacy for the elimination of VAW, and as one of the build-up activities for the annual observance of the 18-day campaign to end VAW.

PCW adviser and paralegal training coordinator Marie June Pavillar-Castro said to be admitted as training scholars, participants from the LGUs should be at least high school graduates, have undergone gender sensitivity trainings and orientations on basic human rights and VAW.

Topics to be discussed on day 1 include Philippine Herstory and Legal System, Introduction to Law, Philosophy of Para-legalism, and about Substantive and Procedural Laws.

Participants will review why women’s rights are human rights, and compare civil and criminal cases, as well as discuss marriage, legal separation and psychological incapacity.

To be tackled in the morning of day 2 are support, parental authority, property relations and introduction to criminal law.

The review of crimes related to VAW, and the Special Protection of Children against Child Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act will be held early afternoon. After which, discussion of criminal procedure, rights of the accused, civil procedure, and evidence will be held from mid-afternoon until the evening sessions.

The Katarungang Pambarangay will be discussed on day 3 and this will be followed by lectures and workshops or practicum on paralegal skills such as case analysis, legal interview and affidavit making.

After completing the course, training scholars will receive paralegal manuals on VAW produced by the Sentro ng Alternatibong Lingap Panlegal.
