Childlike wonder

“WITH design, I am inspired by narrations of fiction and history; an oxymoron in terms of reality since the former is imaginative while the other is truth.”

It was with this thought process that Cebuano fashion designer, Jann Bungcaras, came up with his recent collection titled “Wanderings of a Child Prince,” inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s “The Little Prince.”

This is Jann’s Spring 2019 collection and was showcased at this year’s Bench Design Awards, a competition aiming to discover this country’s budding talents in the fashion industry. The event was held last Sept. 2 at the Bench Tower, Bonifacio Global City, Metro Manila, Philippines—an experience he found unbelievable and humbling.

More than re-telling the story in motion, it was also a depiction of Jann’s story and how he related to the novella, from his childhood musings to a tragedy that struck him.

“It seems like I was confronted by the younger version of myself, pleading me to pursue my first love: fashion. And this phenomenon is the main metaphor of the story,” said Jann. “‘The Little Prince’ is the younger version of the aviator confronting him as to why he had forgotten his dreams; how he had forgotten his wonder, his childhood, his spark.”

It was through the use mostly recycled fabric discarded by factories, that he created the looks using techniques like wool felting, hand knitting and manipulation of jusi. From there, came the narration as each piece evoked tell-tale signs of “The Little Prince” elements—like a walking tale of how the story unfolds from one look after another.

“Each look has the juxtaposition of literal and metaphorical elements which refers to the classic book,” he shared.

“As you look at each piece in the collection, you can see the Little Prince’s wandering, from meeting the aviator into becoming one of the stars.”
