FORMER Interior secretary Rafael Alunan III said "we must unite to change our ways, save our future and build a better nation.

He said this during a press conference held Thursday, November 15, in Bacolod City.

Alunan, a Negrense, also addressed the members of the Rotary International 3850, Zones 5, 6 and 7 during their joint meeting held at O Hotel.

Alunan said: "there is so much to fix in our country due to negligence, incompetence, and irresponsibility."

"And for the sake of society, crimes against humanity should be meted with the death penalty in a court of law when the proof is beyond reasonable doubt, he added.

“Bad things should happen to bad people swiftly so that the law will be feared and respected. Thus, imposing the death penalty for crimes against humanity must be complemented by reforms in the criminal justice system and amending existing laws to effectively discourage criminals from operating with impunity without fear of lawful reprisal. A death penalty is an act of self-defense at a time when all forms of criminality and terrorism are impacting the Philippines. Society will be all the better for it,” he added.

Meanwhile, the former official said he has no problem with federalism. "My problem is whether you know how to make it work for the long term for the benefit of the people, and what model is the best suited for our culture. The choices we make and our collective actions will determine the fate of federalism.”
