Cheesesteak for comfort

ONE of the best ways to get to know a certain culture is through its food. Places like The Market by Sugbo Mercado here in Cebu provide a diverse selection of cuisines perfect for those who wish to partake in something other than the usual.

It was this diversity that attracted couple Jed and Katy Capuy to the place, leading them to put up Jed’s Fili Cheesesteak which offers—yes—Philly cheesesteak. A straightforward, no-nonsense food, it’s something one can have any time of the day—no fuss.

“It’s not fancy. It’s very much ‘feel-good’ food,” said Jed. “I was like ‘wouldn’t everybody love this?’ We just noticed what wasn’t around.”

He also shared that since Jed’s Fili Cheesesteak opened, it has received favorable reviews from its customers—including a positive review from a tiny tot.

“The most heartwarming comment, which I didn’t think would happen—we just wanted to sell food that I like, exactly the food that I want to eat that Katy makes at our house—but this eight-year-old kid was like ‘You guys are doing Western flavors that I’ve never had before,’ and I never thought of it that way,” he said.

Jed’s FIli Cheesesteak also offers other comfort food like nachos, crinkle cut fries and hot dogs.

Find Jed’s Fili Cheesesteak at The Market by Sugbo Mercado, open from Tuesday to Thursday 4 to 10 p.m. and Friday to Sunday 4 p.m. to 1 a.m.
