Tapear Like a Tita

Tapear Like a Tita

BACK in the day, tapas referred to slices of bread or meat used as tapa or lid to keep flies from swarming over drinks. Now they’re a culinary category in themselves and have crossed borders and seas, from Spain to the world. Cebu is no exception, thanks to the Wong and Leano family who recently opened Que Pasa Tapas Bar and Lounge.

“Que pasa?” which means “What’s up?” in Spanish, is equivalent to saying “Unsa’y ayo?” in Cebuano and “Kumusta?” in Tagalog. After a trip to Spain and having gorged on authentic tapas and sangrias, Kyle and Billy Wong wanted to bring that pairing to Cebu. As they often hear their Spanish friends greet people “Que pasa?” they thought it would be a good name for the resto as Cebuanos could relate to it. Making the new even more familiar, they have infused local flavors into their tapas.

Responsible for this tasty twist to traditional tapas are chefs Paul Marco Samson and David Cruz.

Chef Marco is currently the regional consultant of Nestle Philippines. He co-owns two restaurants with Chef David who’s the business development chef for GMA. The two are also content contributors for Yummy magazine.

For Que Pasa, the place has come up with wicked combinations arranged like artwork such as chicken skin with truffle honey, liver pate with mango, and paella with aioli and chicken skin, among many others which you can have as many of as your belly will allow. In addition to its red and white sangrias, Que Pasa also serves a variety of cocktails and cervezas.

So how does one tapear (have tapas) like the locals do in Spain? It usually starts in one place.

You order a drink along with one or two tapas, linger a while and have a good time with your friends, pay for your mini meal, move to another bar and repeat.

Located at Nivel Hills, Cebu Veterans Drive, Lahug, Que Pasa has nailed the mix of accessibility, friendly service, high quality yet reasonably priced food, and good wine. Plus, its inviting vibe and laidback atmosphere will have you staying long before and after happy hour. Now you can call up the amigas for that long overdue catch-up sesh.
