WHEN boredom hits us, we tend to just sit back on our couch, watch movies, eat, or even sleep on our beds just to kill time.

But for Terence Zabala, he sets aside boredom and makes use of his time giving back to the community.

Every Wednesday during his day off, barber Terence Zabala takes to the streets of Davao City to seek homeless people and give them a refreshing makeover.

Inspired by his idols outside the country who are also street barbers, Terence also wants to do something for his community. Saving money for quite some time from his earnings as a barber, he bought a suitcase stacked with hairstyling apparatus.

Just last year, Davao’s only street barber has made many homeless people feeling fresh again with his expertise in razor blades and scissors.

“I was also a street child before, and I want to give back the blessings that God gave me today in my capacity as a barber,” he said in the vernacular.

He also encourages other people, especially his fellow barbers to give homeless people their little attention and help them in their own ways.

“I am encouraging my fellow barbers to give free haircuts to the homeless people, to use their God-given skill to the less fortunate as a way of thanking him for his blessings to us,” Terence added.

Aside from giving the homeless free cut, he sometimes also gives money or food to complete the package as what he said.

He can also encounter some people who refused his free haircut but Terence makes use of the day to seek a person whose hair needs cutting.

Using his phone, he records his crusade as a street barber and uploads it online.

When boredom is being used as a tool to make a difference in a society bombarded with online activity and less physical activity, surely more people will be productive every day regardless of their status in life. After all, not all heroes wear capes, others just hold scissors and a comb yet can still make a huge difference.
