Tell it to SunStar: Teach Philippine History in high school

THE Department of Education (DepEd) needs to rectify its error four years ago when it dissolved the teaching of Philippine History in the secondary curriculum.

Even Andres Bonifacio knew the importance of the lessons of our people’s history-- he studied it on his own and he used our own language to write revolutionary literature that paved the way to our liberation.

We need to reform the curriculum to instill values such as patriotism, respect for justice, human rights and rule of law.

We have to design our public education system to produce children and citizens with a deep sense of history, who recognize patrimony and are proud of their national identity.

The DepEd should immediately enforce the teaching of Philippine History in high school.” -Benjo Basas, Teachers Dignity Coalition national chairperson
