City Council oks Minnie’s donation for skate park

SKATEBOARDERS in Cebu are getting an early Christmas gift.

Last Nov. 13, the Cebu City Council passed a resolution authorizing Mayor Tomas Osmeña to enter into and sign in behalf of the City Government a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Maria Victoria "Minnie" Osmeña for the construction of a skate park.

Minnie, the mayor's sister, donated US$100,000, or over P5 million, to build the facility on a 4,500-square-meter lot at the back of Fort San Pedro. It will be open to skateboarders living outside the city.

Councilor Eugenio Gabuya Jr. filed the approved resolution.

The initial plan was to build the skate park on a lot within the 26-hectare South Road Properties that three real estate developers bought. But Gabuya said they decided to construct it in a more accessible area.

The skate park will break ground in early December.

Under the draft MOA, the City Government will be the skate park’s administrator and will assume absolute ownership of the facility after its turnover.

For her part, Minnie will donate a skate park on a parcel of land provided by the City Government.

She will be responsible for the construction of the facility and she will turn it over to the City after its completion.

"Both the first (City) and second party (Minnie Osmeña) shall be present during the turnover ceremony where the second party shall turn over and deliver the skate park to the first party," a portion of the MOA read. (RTF)
