THE University of Cebu (UC) and Unit 1 share the glory in the 28th Cebu City Olympics after winning the secondary and elementary overall titles, respectively, on Sunday, Nov. 18.

The powerhouse UC topped the secondary division anew in a dominating fashion, racking up a total of 57 gold medals, 57 silver medals and 47 bronze medals after five days of competition.

The University of San Carlos- Basic Education Department (USC-BED) hauled 36 gold medals, 32 silvers and 28 bronzes to take second place, while Unit IX harvested 20 golds, 20 silvers and 19 bronzes for third place.

UC’s athletic director Jessica Honoridez said in a telephone interview that this success was attributed to the hard work of the coaches and athletes.

“This is the results of our sports program. We preached communication because it is an important key to success. I connect with the coaches, the coaches will be the ones to motivate the athletes,” said Honoridez.

In the elementary division, there was a new overall champion that was crowned as Unit 1 dethroned Unit 5 in the multi-sporting meet organized as a qualifier to the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa).

Unit 1 accumulated 25 golds, 22 silvers and 23 bronzes to escape with a close win over Unit 5, which got 25 golds, 16 silvers and 21 bronzes. UC got third place with 23 golds, 12 silvers and six bronzes.

Unit 3 (11-15-12) and Unit 6 (11-5-14) finished at fourth and fifth places in the secondary division, while Unit 8 (16-19-17) and Unit 4 (16-13-20) completed the overall Top 5 teams in the elementary class.

On the other hand, the Don Bosco Technological Center (DBTC) and the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) ruled their respective divisions in the football championship at the Cebu City Sports Center.

The defending champion DBTC blanked Unit 6, 5-0, to assert its dominance in the elementary division. DBTC scored three goals in the first half to pull away from Unit 6, which was represented by Paref-Springdale, Bright Academy and Lahug.

DBTC coach Glen Ramos said that despite the dominating win he’s not still confident with the team’s performance when compared to the Under-12 rivals in the country.

“The team needs to improve on the technical side of our plays and also, we need more exposure,” said Ramos, who steered Region 7’s football team to a gold medal finish in the 2017 Palarong Pambansa and a silver medal in the 2018 Palarong Pambansa.

Ramos said that this current team has a new set of players.

Meanwhile, the USJ-R beat DBTC, 6-4, in a penalty shootout to win the secondary division title.

DBTC was the first to score at the 42nd minute in regulation but USJ-R found the back of the net in the 75th minute to tie the game at 1-all and send it to a penalty shootout.

Technical committee head Francis Ramirez said that once the final lineup for Cviraa will be finalized, the Department of Education will release a memorandum for the athletes’ training.

“If the lineup will be released in the last week of November, then the players can start training. Even during the Christmas break, most of our players will continue their training,” he said. (RSC)
