City council backs wage increase for teachers

THE Bacolod City Council is supporting the proposed increase in the monthly minimum wage for public school teachers to P28, 000 and non-teaching personnel to P16, 000.

The resolution, authored by Councilor Wilson Gamboa Jr., stated that education is given the highest priority in governance, and that teaching will attract and retain its rightful share of the best available talents by means of adequate remuneration and other means of job satisfaction.

He said the said Senate Bill No. 2034, which was authored by Senator Nancy Binay, seeks to raise the salary of the public school teachers and non-teaching personnel in which it will negate the image of the teacher as poor and buried in debt.

“Teachers and other professionals deserve to live a life of dignity, respect, and decent compensation,” he added.

As of January 2018, the entry-level position of a licensed teacher on a salary grade 11 amounts to P20,179 while the non-teaching personnel, who provide support to teachers, earn only P10,510 per month, he said.

Gamboa said public school teachers play a significant role in educating the Filipino youth who turn become the future leaders of the country.

“They lead an extraordinary part in the lives of the Filipino children, molding them to become a responsible citizen,” he said.
