The gospel of popcorn

WHY isn’t popcorn more of a thing? In this day and age of fad diets and crusades launched left and right against all things offensive, a good bowl of popcorn is the snack universe’s final ticket to redemption.

Like, I get why milk tea is popular. Heck, I get why Whoppers are quick fixes in this part of town. But, I feel like we need to lighten up with the snacking a little bit.

Which brings me to beautiful popcorn. Theoretically, a healthier alternative to processed snack food that are coated with tons of either salt or sugar. Popcorn when prepared and partaken of as plain as its color, is a low caloric, healthy whole grain food.

Alright. I don’t have popcorn like that. I’m more of a Sour Cream and Onion guy, or a slice of butter and a dash of salt would just do.

So what? The debate regarding popcorn’s health benefits compared to the global roster of junkfood is like breaking down and deciding which of the candidates in the upcoming elections are the best ones: pick the lesser evil and you’ll live.

That’s right, popcorn is junkfood’s clean-cut ambassador. And we’re not even talking of the cost yet.

Popcorn seed, prepared at its barest and at home, yields more and feeds more. For a culture deep into anticipation for the fourth “Avengers” film, Filipinos have yet to discover the magic of this snack. And I don’t mean popcorn packaged into some commercial brand, but for popcorn seeds to infiltrate every pantry and for it to be prepared in every home, during every snack hour, for every movie time etc.

Speaking of movie time, don’t you just get annoyed at hearing potato or corn chips snap at every bite at the theater? When Bucky finally destroys Cap, sending him underwater, and the entire movie creates the illusion of silence by muting everything else but the lows, no one wants to hear the sounds of chips chewed.

But popcorn... There are no plastic bags to tear open as these are often served in paper bags, and chewing a mouthful won’t even attract the baddies from “A Quiet Place” to come get you.

What a beautiful snack, millennials. You have the power to make this trend through IG and save the planet from caloric defeat. #VotePopcorn. Come up with a better hashtag. Make it happen, kids.
