Ex-soldier, technician hurt in Pagadian gun attack

TWO people survived although wounded in two gun attacks that occurred a house apart in Zamboanga del Sur, the police said Tuesday, November 20.

Chief Inspector Helen Galvez, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer, identified the victims as Mario Piga, 55, a retired soldier; and Arnel Maliao, 39, a cable television technician.

Piga is currently the commandant of the Reserve Officers’ Training Course of the JH Cerilles State College in Pagadian City

She said Piga was shot at 12:45 p.m. Monday at Purok Bethlehem in Banale village, Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur.

Galvez said the Piga was washing plates outside his residence when repeatedly shot by one of two men riding in a motorcycle that stopped in front of his gate.

Further investigation showed that the victim had just received his retirement benefits and was at odds lately with his estranged wife, who wanted to take control of the victim’s benefits, Galvez added.

The police officer said recovered from the crime scene were 12 empty shells of caliber .45 pistols and one deformed slug and metal jacket.

The victim was hospitalized for treatment.

Galvez said Maliao, technician of Kismet Cable Television was repeatedly shot around 5:30 p.m. Monday at the corners of Aquino and Cabrera Streets in Gatas village, Pagadian City.

The police official said Maliao was shot by one of two also riding tandem in a motorcycle when the victim went out of the cable television office.

Maliao was rushed to the hospital by his co-employees.

Recovered from the crime scene were three empty shells of caliber .45 pistol and two slugs one of which was deformed.
