WITH the aim to make Cebu the paddling capital of the country, the Island Buzz Philippines has officially unveiled the first 6-man ocean canoe locally made in the Philippines on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at the Chateau by the Sea in Brgy. Punta Engaño, Lapu-Lapu City.

Hawaii’s legendary paddler Kimokeo Kapahulehua was the special guest in the unveiling ceremony of the Ocean 6 Canoe named Maharlika Big 6.

Kapahulehua is known in Hawaii, especially in Maui, for his tireless efforts to preserve the Hawaiian culture and the traditions in land and sea.

The 71-year-old Kapahulehua, also known as Hawaii’s wisdom keeper, blessed the Maharlika Big 6 canoe, a lightweight narrow boat that moves by paddling and is used for expedition and also in sporting competition.

The Maharlika Big 6 was locally manufactured by Island Buzz Philippines, a water sports company which advocates and promotes Cebu to become the “Paddling Capital of the Philippines.”

Island Buzz Philippines is doing this to honor the cultural heritage as islanders and seafarers.

Ocean Canoe paddling is considered a lifestyle in the countries like Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand, while Singapore and Hong Kong also hold races. (RSC)
