Ma-a inmate shot dead

A DAVAO City inmate tried to escape from detention Sunday afternoon but was shot dead after attacking a jail guard using an improvised ice pick.

The inmate was identified as Rey Aragon Angeles, 26, who was detained at the Maximum Cell number 3 and a resident of Puting Bato, Barangay Riverside, Calinan district, Davao City.

Angeles was detained for murder at Regional Trial Court (RTC) in Ecoland.

Davao City Jail officer-in-charge Ian Glenn Ocmen reported that Angeles joined a throng of visitors leaving the premises and attacked Jail Officer 1 Rogelio Go, who was guarding post number 2 around 3:50 p.m. Sunday.

Rene Parejas, another inmate, tried to dissuade Angeles, who continued to attack Go and SJO3 Arnold Sierra with an improvised ice pick.

Jail Officer 1 Paquito Eyao, duty sentinel of post number 4, fired at Angeles after he ignored the warning shot.

Angeles was brought to the Davao Medical Center (DMC), where he died while undergoing treatment.

"Gusto niyang makalabas sa jail kaya gusto niyang makuha ang aking service firearms," Go said in an interview with Sun.Star Superbalita.

Members of Talomo Police Station and Scene of the Crime Operatives (Soco) found two empty shells and a slug of a caliber .45 gun at the scene. A toothbrush with a sharpened end was also recovered from Angeles's underwear.

The service firearm of Eyao, along with 18 bullets, was voluntarily endorsed by Ocmen to the police.

Eyao underwent a paraffin test while the gun was submitted for ballistic examination.

"Ongoing ngayon ang investigation ng Bureau of Jail Management and Penology Regional Office 11 (Davao Region), Regional Investigation Division and Talomo Police Station," Ocmen said.
