Angeles City disaster office holds second ‘Rescue Olympics’

WITH the aim of developing the capacity and skills of each community and schools in responding to emergency situations, the Angeles City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (ACDRRMO) held a two-day Rescue Olympics last November 17 to 18, 2018 at City College of Angeles.

A total of 14 groups from the barangay and school clusters participated in the said olympics with three areas of competition: bandaging, lifting and moving, cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR for infants, children, and adults; and situational analysis.

In the barangay level, the following villages participated in the competition: Tabun, Sto. Domingo, Pandan, Pampang, Ninoy Aquino, Sapalibutad and Lourdes Northwest, while Bonifacio V. Romero High School, Francisco G. Nepomuceno Memorial High School, Amsic Integrated School, Angeles City National High School, Governor Rafael L. Lazatin Integrated School and Northville 15 Integrated School competed under the schools cluster.

ACCDRMO Research and Planning Chief Ricky Pinlac said more contingents participated in this year’s Rescue Olympics as compared to the number of participants in the previous edition.

Barangay Pandan and Northville 15 Integrated School were hailed as the over-all champion for different levels in the said competition. Special awards were given to rescue teams that excelled in each category. The winners will be recognized on December 17, 2018 at Azzuro Hotel.

For his part, Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan hailed the winning contingents in the competition saying that the event “is a proof of the people’s shared interests in improving the city’s disaster risk reduction measures”.

“We hope that our participants will continue working hand-in-hand with the local government in spreading awareness on the importance of disaster preparedness,” said Mayor Pamintuan.

Recently, the Angeles DRRMO won the 20th Regional Gawad Kalasag award given by the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office of Central Luzon.

This qualified the City Government of Angeles to vie in the national search of Gawad Kalasag, staged by the Office of Civil Defense where local government units who have raised the standards of disaster management are annually recognized. (PR)
