More investments needed to complete Mindanao railway

MINDANAO Development Authority (Minda) deputy executive director Romeo Montenegro said investments are needed to complete segments for the Mindanao Railway.

“Minda is pushing for seeking allocation of funds for all other segments of the entire Mindanao Railway Project. This is to make sure that the entire 2,500 kilometer-stretch of the railway can be developed,” Montenegro said.

The other segments include the Davao-Nabunturan-Butuan (256km), Butuan-Cagayan de Oro-Iligan (285km), and the Iligan-Cotabato-Davao (289km).

“The wisdom of our chair is not to wait for one phase to finish to start the other phase, but to already lay down plans for all other phases and secure funding for such phase,” Montenegro said.

He added Minda continues to market these developments in order to gain more fundings, as this is part of ensuring more investments in Mindanao to come.

Minda executive director Janet Lopoz said that consistent meeting in updating development plans like the Mindanao 2030 is important in securing also the vision of where Mindanao is heading to.

The Mindanao 2030 (M2030) is an updated version of its predecessor Mindanao 2020. The M2030 is the new peace and development framework plan.

It was updated last May 2018 in order to assess the objectives of M2020.

Lopoz said once these segments will be finished, then more developments in Mindanao can be realized especially that this is one of the main goals under the present administration.
