Kimmayong tops January chess tourney

RAFAEL Kimmayong had a bigger advantage in the tie break to win the top honor in the January edition of the Kordilyera Chess Association monthly tournament at Kitma, Marcos Highway recently.

Kimmayong was tied with Frederick Bintuhan with identical 12.5 points after the tournament but Bintuhan was relegated to second place after the former had a better tie break in the earlier part of the tournament.

Both Kimmayong and Bintuhan shared the top prize of P5,000 including trophies for the January edition of the tournament.

Daryl Kipas, Raymund Passi, and Oscar Guanzon also shared the prize of P1,500 after placing third, fourth and fifth, respectively, after having identical 8.5 points in the Swiss type format of tournament.

The KCA’s monthly tournament was launched last year and culminated in a “battle of champions” hosted by the municipal government of La Trinidad with Oscar Guanzon as the eventual winner.

Inspired by the successful hosting for the past year, the chess games have been transferred to #41 Upper Kitma along Marcos Highway in Baguio City effective January 30.

Roger Garcia, vice president of the Kordilyera Chess Association said the tournament was moved to Kitma to give the tournament a more homely atmosphere.

The next monthly tournament will be slated on February 27 to 28, also in Kitma. (Roderick Osis)
