THE Don Bosco Technological Center (DBTC) grabbed two titles, while Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu outlasted rival St. Theresa’s College in a pulsating shootout in the first day of the SunStar Football Cup at the Cebu City Sports Center last Saturday, Nov. 24.

DBTC won the Players 6 and 8 divisions, with brothers Christian and Carlo Felesis earning the MVPs.

In the Players 6 division, DBTC finished second in the group stage after posting a 4-1 record for 12 points, trailing the Einstein Mighty Geeks. In Group 2, DBTC B got the top spot with 13 points, while University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Balamban finished second with 11 points.

In the crossover semifinal, DBTC A got past sister team DBTC B, 1-0, while USJ-R Balamban handed the Mighty Geeks its first loss, 6-5, via shootout. In the final, DBTC A zoomed ahead 3-0 and never looked back to win the title, relegating USJ-R to second place.

In the Players 8 Division, DBTC A topped their group after winning all three matches and got past Springdale Crius, 1-0, in the quarterfinals before beating Giuseppe FC, 2-0, in the semis to arrange a finals match with the visiting CNN Dolphins of San Carlos City.

The Dolphins also topped their group with a 3-0 record and beat DBTC B, 4-3, in the quarterfinals and DBTC F, 1-0, in the semis. In the finals, it was a close contest with DBTC A winning the crown, 1-0.

In the Girls 16 division, SHS-Ateneo topped their group with a 2-1 record, while STC also topped Group 1 after winning all four games. In the semifinals, STC beat the Guardian Strikers, 1-0, while Ateneo got past Labogon, 1-0.

The finals was a close affair with neither team scoring in regulation and the shootout going into sudden death before Ateneo finally bag the crown thanks to Cassandra Gillamac, who was named the MVP. ML
