VSO Philippines organized mangrove planting activity on November 23, as part of its 60th anniversary celebration.

Around 1,000 mangrove seedlings were planted for shoreline protection from storms, waves, and floods in Bucana. A total of 161 volunteers participated in making this very small step in addressing climate change concerns.

This is also part of their efforts to take on the call of the United Nations in celebrating volunteering worldwide on International Volunteers Day (IVD).

Earlier, they organized the Painting for Peace on November 17. Then there will be an exhibit on volunteering on December 5.

IVD aims to build awareness among the youth and the community about the importance of conserving the country’s coastlines and the role of volunteers in the conservation and rehabilitation of Davao City’s natural coastlines. These initiatives showcase the importance of volunteer-ism in local development and in sustaining peace, green environment, and harmony in a community.

VSO Philippines was founded in the 1960s and currently works on poverty and conflict in Mindanao, while actively sending Filipino volunteers to do vital development work around the world.

VSO Philippines programme in Mindanao has been collaborating with Davao City Government, City Environment and Natural Resources Office-Davao City, Buhagin LGU Council, Baranggay 76-A Bucana, Buhangin Elementary School, Ateneo de Davao University-AGSCA, Camera Club of Southern Philippines, Gaisano Mall of Davao, Interface Development Interventions, Philippine Eagle Foundation, Philippine Women’s College, Rizal Memorial Colleges, Royeca Ballet, Sustainable Davao Movement, and VSO Re-turned Volunteers.

VSO is a global leader in volunteering for development, and evidence shows that our volunteers in the Philippines are successful in reaching excluded groups, drive innovation and inspire people to create change in their own communities. Globally, over the past 60 years, VSO has worked with over 76,000 volunteers in over 120 countries.

“Volunteers from the Philippines are really important to VSO’s work around the world. We recruit 50 Filipinos a year to work across Asia and Africa, doing vital jobs in health, education, social and economic development. It’s a superb opportunity for Filipinos to give something to other developing countries bringing back valuable learnings that they can apply to communities in the Philippines upon their return,” VSO Philippines–Head of Programme said.

VSO will continue to make steps in fighting poverty through volunteering by sharing skills to change the lives of others. (PR)
