MCWD to accept desalination firms

THE Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) will accept proposals from companies for the desalination of sea water for the whole island of Mactan.

Charmaine Rodriguez-Kara, MCWD spokesperson, said there is one company that had submitted its proposal, although she could not name it publicly yet.

The water firm had been accepting proposals since the second quarter of this year.

Desalination is the process of treating seawater to rid it of salt so it becomes potable.

Kara said the MCWD hopes to make Mactan island’s water supply independent from mainland Cebu.

As of now, Lapu-Lapu City and Cordova town get their supply from mainland Cebu, specifically from Carmen town, the Cebu Manila Water Development (CMWD), and in Danao City with which the MCWD has an agreement.

The MCWD said it had told potential investors of the required volume of water for desalination in Mactan Island.

In 2017, Mactan needed 90,000 cubic meters of clean water every day, and continues to increase in 2018.

But the MCWD could only supply 21,000 cubic meters to its consumers in the island. From SCG of Superbalita Cebu
