Visiting Dolphins bag P10 crown

SACRED Heart School (SHS)-Ateneo de Cebu won another girls title, while visiting CNN Dolphins of San Carlos City won’t be going home empty-handed after winning their division in the 7th SunStar Football Cup at the Cebu City Sports Center.

SHS-Ateneo, which won the Girls 16 title over St. Theresa’s College (STC), added the Girls 18 division after beating a game University of San Carlos (USC) Ladies via shootout.

Ateneo topped their group with a 2-1 record, while the USC Ladies finished second on a one win, 2 draw record. In the semifinals, Ateneo outlasted STC, 1-0, while the USC Ladies blanked the Ormoc Soccer Association, 2-0, to arrange a finals showdown.

Both teams failed to score in the finals, leading to a shootout, where USC missed all three penalty kicks, while Ateneo made its final attempt to win the title. Peeve Layague was named the MVP.

In the Girls 14 division, it was Ateneo’s turn to settle for second as the Labogon King Forest FC grabbed the title in the league-type tournament. Labogon held Ateneo de Cebu to a scoreless draw in their last game to finish with seven points, beating Ateneo, which settled for second with five points.

Mary Grace Manatag was named the MVP.

On the other hand, the CNN Dolphins made their trip to Cebu memorable after topping the Players 10 division over Cebu Sherilin A. The Dolphins topped their group with a 3-0 record and beat Cebu Sherelin B in the quarterfinals, 2-0, and Don Bosco Technological Center (DBTC) D, 1-0, in the semis.

Cebu Sherilin A also had a 3-0 record in the group stage and routed Einstein Mighty Geeks, 4-1, in the quaterfinals and beat Giuseppe FC, 1-0, in the semifinals. In the finals, it was all CNN Dolphions as Matthew Lingasca towed the team to a 2-0 victory to earn the MVP award.

On the other hand, after winning the Players 6 and 8 titles early Saturday, Nov. 24, DBTC added the Boys 18 title with a 2-0 win over Tabor Hill with Josh Asignar earning the MVP.

DBTC B won their group with a 2-1 record and advanced to the finals after beating Avengers, 3-0, in the quarterfinals and Guardian Strikers, 1-0, in the semifinals. On the other hand, Tabor Hill beat Alegria, 1-0, in the quarterfinals and DBTC A, 4-3, in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, in the inaugural Men’s Professionals division, Leylam FC won title with a 2-1 win over rival Erco in the final. Michael Pacite earned the MVP award. (ML)
