Focus on and understand one's customers by using existing digital tools to enhance their experience, Jose Labayen, a user experience lead and one of the speakers of Developers Connect (Devcon) Summit 2018, advised business owners.

"It's more on looking where your customers are at. Like what platforms do they usually use," he told SunStar Cebu.

Labayen said that for a business to thrive, business owners should find the best solution for their customers and clients.

"It's really understanding customers in their context and their own world," he said.

Francis Alturas, director of design at Symph, a Philippine-based software design and development company, also called for a more aggressive approach towards digital transformation especially in the economic landscape.

"If you think about it, digital transformation is something that is inevitable. That is something you can't avoid. It will happen. Either you ride on it or you get left behind," he said.

Alturas said that a lot of brick and mortar businesses are facing the challenge, as more consumers are going online instead of going to the physical store to buy the products they need.

As someone who designs web and mobile interfaces for startups, Alturas said that when a business goes digital, it is enhanced to make it convenient for consumers.

"It's not about like we're changing the fundamental process of their business but it's more about augmenting it and making it faster, and better, and more efficient. It's not about changing everything. It's more like adding value, enhancing, rather than taking away or making something new," he said.

Labayen and Alturas were the keynote speakers at the DevCon Summit 2018 held at the Michael Richartz Hall, University of San Carlos Technological Center Saturday, Nov. 24.

DevCon Summit 2018: Cebu Edition is a developer gathering conference with 500 attendees from Cebu and the neighboring provinces participating in the event.

Devcon is a non-profit organization which aims to promote the Filipino information technology talents by providing a platform for students, educators, professionals and enthusiasts to "sync, support and succeed." / JOB
