YEAR 2019 is going to be an important one for the youth as the Archdiocese of Cebu opened the Year of the Youth during the Christ the King celebration on Sunday, November 25.

During the opening of the Year of the Youth, Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma announced to more than 4,000 participants that Cebu will host next year’s National Youth Day (NYD).

It will be the first time that the NYD will be held in Cebu since it started in 1986.

Palma made the announcement during the Christ the King mass at the Fuente Osmeña circle, which was attended by members of Catholic youth organizations from different parishes.

The Year of the Youth carries the theme “Filipino Youth in Mission: Beloved, Gifted and Empowered.”

In his homily, Palma reminded the youth that they are an important part of society and should be loved by all.

He also reminded them that God does not forsake the youth even in times of great turmoil.

“In times when we feel we are not loved enough, karong hapona we are reminded we are loved. We should never doubt when we are noted for great devotion,” Palma said.

Palma also reminded the youth to use their gifts for the service of others.

“Put gifts in the service of one another, mao kini ang hagit natong tanan. Usahay, we take for granted what we have,” he added.

After the mass at the Fuente Osmeña circle, Palma then led a procession from uptown Cebu City to the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral.

After the procession, Palma consecrated the Blessed Sacrament at the Cathedral to formally conclude the activities.

The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines declared 2019 as the Year of the Youth as part of its “nine-year journey towards new evangelization.” (JKV)
