THE unloading of 100,000 bags or 5,000 metric tons (mt) of rice from Thailand is ongoing, an official of the National Food Authority (NFA) in Negros Occidental said.

Marianita Gellecanao, assistant manager of NFA-Negros Occidental, Monday, November 26, said the additional import allocation of the province arrived on November 23 at Bredco Port via MV Inlaco Express.

Gellecanao said 19,352 bags were already unloaded as of November 26. Most of these stocks are currently housed at two warehouses in Bacolod City.

A portion of the unloaded rice were already transported to warehouses in Ilog and San Carlos City, with 500 bags each.

"Under normal condition, meaning without disturbances like bad weather, the unloading is targeted to be finished on December 5," she told SunStar Bacolod, adding that the new allocation will add to the remaining buffer stocks of about 1,200 bags augmented earlier by NFA-Iloilo.

The 100,000 bags for Negros Occidental form part of the 600,000 bags shipped by MV Inclaro Express.

The bigger allocation of 500,000 bags was earlier unloaded to two other disports, or discharge port, areas in General Santos City and Davao.

This is the second import allocation for the province in 2018. The first importation of 80,000 bags arrived in July, also from Thailand.

Gellecanao said NFA-Negros Occidental has already requested the Bureau of Customs for it to start the distribution.

With the additional import allocation, Gellecanao said they can also start increasing the distribution to 20 to 50 bags per retail outlet among major and non-traditional markets.

During the previous months when stocks are limited, the agency calibrated the distribution to only five to 10 bags.

"Our distribution will be back to normal starting next week," she said, adding that the amount for distribution is subject to computation basing on the marketing plan.
