1st Minglanilla Mayor's Cup pushed back

DUE to some earlier commitments of some other participating teams, organizers of the 1st Minglanilla Mayor’s Cup Inter-Collegiate Basketball Championships have decided to postpone the opening of the event to Dec. 7 at the Minglanilla Sports Complex.

The week-long tournament was originally scheduled to kickoff on Saturday, Dec. 1, but in a meeting headed by municipal’s administrator Concordio “Cording” Mejias with the team coaches/representatives, it was agreed that it will be moved to a later date.

University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers, the reigning three-peat champions of Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation, Inc. (Cesafi) men’s basketball, will lead the cast of some of the best collegiate teams in Cebu in a tournament that has a total cash prize of P200,000.

Expected to give Lancers a stiff contest are the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, whom they met in the best-of-three Cesafi finals last month that went through the full route. University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters, University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers and Southwestern University-Phinma (SWU) Cobras also signified their intention to join in this competition.

A cash prize of P100,000 is at stake for the champion, while the runner-up will get P50,000. Third and fourth placers will pocket P30,000 and P20,000, respectively. Games will be played on December 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 14 and 15. Meanwhile, Mejias said that they are planning to hold this event annually. (JBM)
