Oro police admit security lapses in Deloso, Borja gun attacks

POLICE authorities are looking into improving and strengthening the security measures after admitting failure of intelligence following the two gun attacks in Cagayan de Oro City involving a high-ranking policeman and a village official last week.

Superintendent Mardy Hortillosa II, spokesperson of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo), said they are reviewing and innovating the security plan for the city after the attempt on the lives of Superintendent Michael John Deloso and Barangay 3 councilor Jonathan Borja.

Deloso and Borja were shot by still unidentified motorcycle-riding assailants in broad daylight three days apart. Both survived the gun attack.

“Giangkon nato nga dunay failure of intelligence kay kung wala pa dili unta to mahitabo busa ta ga-innovate sa atong security plan,” Hortillosa said.

He explained that there is a failure of intelligence when criminals and lawless elements have successfully carried out the crime.

However, Hortillosa clarified that there is no perfect intelligence and they are taking into consideration suggestions like maximizing the “Clean Rider” campaign which the police see as big help in addressing crimes and the proposals to prohibit the wearing of helmet in city streets, among others.

The police official also admitted that there were lapses on the side of the police such as lack of manpower and insufficient resources, but he assured that these are always addressed immediately.

“Ang mga criminal mangita gyud na og paagi ug dili makaya sa police nga bantayan tanan tawo kay kulang kita sa manpower ug resources (The criminals will always find a way and the police are unable to secure all people because of lack of manpower and insufficient resources),” he said.

Hortillosa said the police are reviewing the areas in the city which are prone to crimes and make sure cops are deployed efficiently.

He said they are also enhancing the strategies to deter further crimes that may happen in the city through the enhanced managing police operations.

But again, Hortillosa appealed to the public to implement personal security measures as he reiterated that security is not just the police's concern.
