THE City Government of Davao and its private partner for Torotot Fest promised a grand New Year celebration in Davao City despite firecracker ban.

“This event is our way to support the city government. Magsabasaba ta, mag-celebrate ta. Atong sugaton ang bag-ong tuig nga walay madisgraysa (We should celebrate the new year without casualty),” Phoenix Petroleum corporate affairs manager Beethoven Sur said on an interview with SunStar Davao.

“This is a very good practice and ordinance of the city kay unlike sa uban cities, daghan mangamatay, maputlan ug kamot, pero sa atoa, zero casualty gyud ta (This is a very good practice and ordinance of the city because unlike other cities where firecracker casualties are prevalent, here in the city, we have a zero casualty),” he said.

Following the ordinance of the city on the prohibition of firecrackers under the City Ordinance No. 060-02 of 2002, Torotot Fest was designed to still have a New Year celebration in the city.

“This Torotot Fest is designed for the city kay wala man tay fireworks ug pabuto and ang tradition is every new year, magsaba-saba man gyud ta (This event was designed for the city since we do not have fireworks and firecrackers. And it is our tradition to make noise),” Davao City Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre on an interview with SunStar Davao.

“At least we have a reason to go out and enjoy the New Year,” he said, adding that the city is hopeful for Phoenix Petroleum to continue sponsorship for the next years.

Sur said that the event will have three competitions, namely, Torotot-inspired costume competition, Torotot dance competition, and the Giant torotot competition.

The said competitions are made open to all residents of Davao, dance groups and barangays in the city. Deadline of entries will be on December 20.

“The city's Torotot Fest is a festival celebrated every New Year's Eve, created in support of the city's advocacy of celebrating the New Year in a safe, cost-efficient, and enjoyable manner,” Sur said.

The said activity will start on December 31 at 7 p.m. until the countdown for the New Year.
