Mayor stops road works on J. Luna, Salinas Drive for holiday traffic

MOTORISTS and commuters who pass through J. Luna St. to Salinas Drive in Cebu City will soon be able to do their Christmas shopping without hitch.

Responding to an individual who sought assistance from Mayor Tomas Osmeña due to the inconvenience brought about by a flood control project in the area, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DWPH) 7 has assured that construction work will be temporarily stopped on Dec. 15, or before the City-issued moratorium on road work takes effect.

In a letter to Osmeña dated Nov. 20, officer-in-charge district engineer Jose Gauran Jr. said they will resume work in the area on Feb. 15.

“The target date for 50 percent accomplishment of this project will be on Dec. 15, then the work operation will be temporarily stopped due to the City moratorium and will be resumed on Feb. 15, 2019. The target date for the completion of this project will be on July 2019,” reads a portion on the letter.

Gauran added that because the use of heavy equipment needs partial road closure, the City Transportation Office has allowed the contractor, Pragmatic Development and Construction, to operate for a certain time only, which is from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

But from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., only minor work will be carried out since the road will be opened for public use.

“The reason why it is being purported by the public is that this project has not been given substantial work force,” Gauran said.

A copy of the letter from DPWH was posted by Mayor Osmeña on his Facebook page last Nov. 29.

“To the person who texted me about the flood project in Salinas, DPWH has kindly issued a reply. FYI (for your information), the City’s moratorium only applies to Christmas and Sinulog so we are asking DPWH to resume operations right after the Fiesta Señor,” wrote Osmeña. RTF
