Otop develops 6-K MSMEs

AROUND 6,520 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the country were developed and improved under the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) One Product Next Generation (OTOP Next Gen) in 2017, a trade official said.

DTI Davao del Sur provincial director Delia Ayano said these MSMEs developed a total of 4,960 products and prototypes. Several of these products are now found on supermarkets, weekend bazaars, Go Lokal! outlets, and other market platforms even online.

Ayano added around 50 of these MSMEs come from Davao region.

OTOP Next Gen is DTI’s program to have an avenue to promote products and services. The program aims to offer a package of public-private assistance in order for MSMEs with minimum viable products to come up with new or better offerings with significant improvement and innovation in the areas of quality, product development, design, packaging, standards compliance, marketability, production capability, brand development, among others.

Ayano underscored the importance of MSMEs’ in the development of the national economy.

“Kailangan natin pagtibayin ang mga MSMEs dahil kahit retail ang binibenta nila, dahil sa rami nila malaki rin ang nagiging ambag nila sa ekonomiya (We need to empower the MSMEs even though they mostly sell in retail. Because there are a lot of them, they hugely contribute to the country’s economy),” Ayano said in a interview during the 1st Manufacturer’s forum organized by the Mindanao Agricultural Machinery Industry Association (Mamia)at the Apo View Hotel, Davao City.

Based from DTI’s records in 2016, MSMEs also account for 25 percent of the country’s total exports revenue. It is also estimated that 60 percent of all exporters in the country belong to the MSME sector.

Meanwhile, Philippine Statistics Authority records in 2016 show a total of 915,276 business enterprises are in the country. MSMEs account for 99.57 percent of the total establishments.
