Groups plant mangroves in Macabebe town

THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources, through its Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (Penro), led the mangrove planting operation of stakeholders and various groups at Barangay Consuelo in Macabebe town recently.

The group was joined by the Macabebe High School Supreme Student Government officers and students led by their adviser George Santos.

There were also participants from Cansinala High School, Sampaga High School, RLLMHS Teachers and Alumni, HAU-SHS Teachers, UAPGA-Pampanga President, UASPA-DHVTSU, Salangian Artists and Guru mountaineers.

The Penro said that this is the fourth activity that has been led by the groups in planting mangroves in the area. The activity saw to the planting of 40 mangarove propagules, 20 nipa (sasa) and 30 api-api.

The event aims at promoting the reforestation of much of the coastline and marshes of Macabebe, both as an effort to combat climate change and to protect the ecosystem of the area.

The project is also seen as a way of creating natural barriers for the coastal villages against strong winds and storm surges. The program can also help local fishermen as mangrove trees provide spaces for breeding grounds for fish and other aquatic life. Mangrove forests also help in the balance of marine ecosystems and protection of coastline from erosion.
