ECONOMIC research must relay the heart of human stories instead of merely presenting numeric data, an economics educator said.
University of Southeastern Philippines (Usep) School of Economics acting dean Jennifer Hinlo said this is one of the goals of conducting the 2018 Mindanao Economic Convention Wednesday, December 5, at the Social Hall of Usep Obrero Campus. The economic forum centered on “Sustaining Inclusive Economic Growth and Development of Mindanao”.
Hinlo said the event presented economic researches which can give current economic scenes in Mindanao that could help inform government agencies and even legislators in coming up programs which can help alleviate the current condition of Mindanao.
“We want to have local studies that will help address issues specifically in Mindanao,” Hinlo said in an interview Wednesday.
Some of the presentations focused on agribusiness economics specifically discussing on farm productivity, microfinance, and agricultural productivity. Other researches were on development economics specifically discussing buying behaviors, labor productivity, government programs efficiency, and academic research productivity.
Environment and natural resource economics researches focused on pricing land valuation, and environmental efficiency of selected Asean countries. The econometrics studies highlighted the following discussion points on regional poverty indices, government debt and economic growth relationship, wealth indices, and duration of trade in the Philippine stock market.
Hinlo underscored the importance of the event in disseminating information to common people in order to know about the current situation of Mindanao.
Hinlo said the academe must not only contain its research with students and other researchers. She added the research event could also be an effective way in creating community extension programs to make the researches relevant.
The event was hosted by Usep in partnership with Mindanao Economics Societies, Incorporated, Mindanao Economics and Econometrics Association Incorporated.
