Pope’s Tower designated ‘firecrackers zone’

THE Pope John Paul II Tower at the Reclamation Area is the designated “firecrackers zone” for retailers in Bacolod City.

Executive Assistant Ernie Pineda, head of the market coordinating and monitoring task force, said on Wednesday, December 5, that last year, the sellers also occupied the same area.

Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia issued Memorandum No. 151 directing Pineda to coordinate with different offices concerned and interested businesses for the sale, wholesale, and retail of firecrackers and pyrotechnics.

He also directed Pineda to coordinate with the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Permits and Licensing Division, Bacolod Traffic Authority Office, and the City Legal Office to ensure proper implementation and regulation for the selling of firecrackers and pyrotechnics in the area.

Pineda along with the BCPO, BFP, Permits and Licensing Division, Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office and Department of Trade and Industry convened on Wednesday at the old city hall for the implementation of the order.

“As soon as they pay the special permit, it will be forwarded to the Police Regional Office-6 for the approval so they can start to display their products in the designated firecrackers zone,” Pineda said

He said the Bacolod City Pyrotechnics Vendors and Association has a total of 77 members, but only 70 vendors signified to sell for this year.

“Some members signified to stop selling firecrackers and other pyrotechnics devices after one of their members was arrested last year for selling of five star. They claimed it was not explained that it was an illegal firecracker during their seminar,” he added.

Pineda pointed out they will only allow the firecracker vendors who underwent fireworks safety seminar on August 10 and October 5 to display their products.

“It is the policy of the PNP (Philippine National Police) and the local government unit that only those who underwent fireworks safety seminar can sell firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices,” he said.

On October 29, President Rodrigo Duterte issued Memorandum Order No. 31 directing the PNP and other concerned agencies to strictly implement existing laws, rules, and regulations on the sale, manufacture, distribution, and use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices.

Those selling outside the identified firecrackers zone will be penalized, and their products will be confiscated. (MAP)
