DISREGARDING traffic signs is the top traffic violations committed by drivers in 2018 with 13,291 apprehensions from September 2017 to September 2018, the Davao City Transports and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) data revealed.
CTTMO head Dionisio Abude said during the Ispeak media forum on Thursday, December 6, disregarding traffic signs topped all other traffic violations recorded by the CTTMO in terms of the number of apprehensions.
“Ang atong pinakadako na nakita nato sa statistics kani gyud. Mao ni ang common karon sa atong mga drivers, gina-disregard and traffic sign maong niabot og ingon ani [kadaghan] (This is the most common violation committed by drivers, they disregard the traffic signs, hence, the statistics),” Abude said.
“Ang implication of this is either blatant disregard of traffic rules and regulation or ignorance or lack of knowledge or education sa traffic rules dahil ang driver ay hindi na dumaan ng seminar ay may license na,” Abude said.
He added that other implications may be because of some drivers are just undisciplined or that the driver has no respect for traffic rules.
“Our culture nga kung walay enforcer makita ang driver mu-commit gyud ug violation (Our culture where every time there’s no visible traffic enforcers, we commit intentional violations),” he said.
The traffic violation with the second highest number of apprehended violators is obstruction where 13,102 drivers were apprehended, while 11,556 violators were apprehended for not wearing seatbelt.
There are also 7,051 motorcycle drivers apprehended for not wearing safety helmets and 6,390 drivers apprehended for violating the speed limit set by the City Government of Davao.
“Kani nga mga violations ang taas-taas og percentage (These violations have the highest percentage),” he said.
Last September, Abude warned drivers who park illegally after several pictures were taken by the CTTMO personnel on illegally parked vehicles along the sidewalks and other prohibited areas.
Still from September 2017 to September 2018 data, a total of 3,811 drivers were apprehended for illegal parking.
Meanwhile, he said that there are also 2,628 apprehensions recorded by CTMMO for drivers without license.
